A long-established wholesaler of Echizen washi paper established in 1871. “Washiya,” opened in 2018 in a renovated 100-year-old storehouse built in the Taisho era (1912-1926), is a washi gallery and store featuring all of Sugihara Store's original products and other items. The owner, a washi sommelier, stands in the store and is available for consultation on special washi. In the open ceiling space where a zelkova beam spans across, a massive washi tapestry is also on display. Here, visitors can experience the unique atmosphere of the long-standing storehouse while appreciating the charm of Echizen washi, which has been elevated to the realm of interior design and art.
