The Museum of Murasaki (Murasaki Shikibu and Kokufu Museum)

Sightseeing Spots

The museum was renovated and reopened on April 23, 2021, in honor of Murasaki Shikibu, one of Japan’s most celebrated female writers, who spent her youth around the year 996 in Takefu, Echizen—the site of the provincial capital at the time.

The museum presents Murasaki Shikibu’s journey from her life in Echizen to the writing of The Tale of Genji through an emakimono-style animation and a procession of paper dolls. It also features attractions such as the Hime-mikuji fortune slips, the *Shirube-no-Ma guidance room, and rotating exhibitions that change four times a year—offering plenty to delight even devoted history enthusiasts.

The museum also hosts events and workshops where visitors can learn about and experience the Heian period, during which Murasaki Shikibu lived, as well as traditional crafts that have been passed down since the time of the old provincial capital known as Kokufu.
