Echizen Washi Village Udatsu Craft Museum

Workshops

A paper-making house built in the mid-Edo period was relocated and restored. This is the only facility in Japan where visitors can see the entire process of making washi, from raw material production to papermaking and sun-drying, using traditional tools.
The 「Tsumairi Udatu」raised in front of the entrance to the typical Japanese style house, is a rare architectural style unique to Imadate Goka, and shows the pride and spirit of the paper-makers.
(In Japanese architecture, “Tuma” refers to the side of the building where the entrance and exit are located. )
On the first floor, there is a traditional craftsman's workshop where visitors can experience authentic 「Nagashizuki」 (Nagashizuki is a method of adding sunset hibiscus, etc. to the paper material, scoop them up in the bamboo screen girders, and piling up the made paper).
On the second floor, special exhibitions related to washi paper are held from time to time.
