A distinguished temple also known as “Midō” or “Gobō,” it was founded during the Muromachi period by Zenchin Shōnin, who studied under Rennyo Shōnin of Hongan-ji Temple. The temple’s name was given by Rennyo Shōnin himself. The main hall, featuring a majestic 41 cm-diameter keyaki (zelkova) pillar, exudes grandeur, with intricate craftsmanship visible in details such as the transoms adorned with gold leaf. The garden is lined with trees over 400 years old, and the Main Hall, the kitchen of a Buddhist temple, Reception Hall, Residential palace, Western-style Hall, Earthen Storehouse, Belfry, and Rennyo Hall (Columbarium) are all nationally registered Tangible Cultural Properties. At the Izumo Treasure Hall, visitors can view a wide array of valuable cultural artifacts.
