Kawasosan Hōshunji Temple

Sightseeing Spots

A temple of the Daitoku-ji school of the Rinzai sect, enshrining Dainichi Nyorai as its principal object of worship.
A river flows right beside the temple, and in the past, visitors would purify themselves in this river before offering their prayers.
For this reason, it has come to be affectionately known by the locals as “Kawassan,” a nickname derived from the river.
The temple is believed to grant blessings for safe childbirth and recovery from illness, and many ema (votive plaques) and lanterns have been dedicated in gratitude.
Within the spacious temple grounds stands the Shikishizuka, a haiku monument by Matsuo Bashō that is the oldest of its kind in the prefecture. The main hall also hosts a monthly programming class for local children.
At the end of July each year, the temple holds its principal festival, the “Kawasosan-matsuri,” dedicated to the principal deity, attracting many visitors.
