The road heading west from in front of the Nakamura Hospital parking lot along the old Hokuriku Road (National Route 365) is called “Tansu-machi Street,” a roughly 200-meter-long street where a dozen or so furniture and fittings businesses—specializing in both Japanese and Western-style furniture—are gathered.
Since the late Edo period, craftsmen with woodworking skills lived in the area, and by the mid-Meiji period, full-fledged tansu (chest) makers became the central figures in forming what came to be known as Tansu-machi.
Echizen Tansu, which was designated as a Traditional Craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in December 2013 (Heisei 25), is produced in Echizen City and surrounding areas.
