Daihō-ji Temple

Sightseeing Spots

Daibō-ji is a temple of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land) school of Buddhism, founded in 1603, with a history spanning over 400 years.
With Chion-in Temple in Kyoto as its head temple, the chrysanthemum crest found within the grounds suggests a close historical connection with the Imperial Family.
The temple was struck by two major fires, and the current main hall was rebuilt 150 years ago.
During the day, the main hall is open to the public and can be freely explored.
In late June each year, the Ise Daikagura—a tradition dating back to the Taishō era and designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan—is performed as an offering.
Visitors have the rare opportunity to witness this valuable dance up close.
In spring, the garden is filled with blooming weeping cherry blossoms in full glory.
